As the First LGBTQ+ Artists to Win for Best New Age, Ambient or Chant Album
Carla Patullo Dedicates this GRAMMY® to Pioneering Women in Experimental Cancer Trials
Renowned film composer and multi-instrumentalist, Carla Patullo, has secured her first GRAMMY® win at the 66th Annual GRAMMY® Awards for “SO SHE HOWLS” in the category of Best New Age, Ambient or Chant Album. Making history, Patullo, along with Tonality and the Scorchio Quartet, became the first LGBTQ+ artists to clinch victory in this esteemed category.
“SO SHE HOWLS,” conceived during Patullo’s battle with cancer, blends howling vocals, orchestral swells, and electronic pulses to create a mesmerizing journey from grief and fear to inspiration and healing.
“I began writing the album during a very difficult period of my life when I was going through breast cancer,” said Patullo. Luckily for me, I’m okay and made it out on the other side. But that’s all because of a courageous group of women who, 30 years ago, took an experimental drug that ended up saving my life. I’d like to dedicate this award to them and to doctors like Joyce O’Shaughnessy and Sara Hurvitz who have made the phrase “cure cancer” not just a possibility, but a reality.”
Featuring the GRAMMY®-nominated vocal ensemble Tonality and the Scorchio Quartet, known for collaborations with legends like Philip Glass, Laurie Anderson, and David Bowie, “SO SHE HOWLS” captivates listeners with its hauntingly beautiful sonic landscapes and uplifting anthems of recovery and resilience.
Of the win, Patullo says, “this feels absolutely incredible! I’m so grateful to everyone who took the time to listen to this album, and all the musicians who were a part of it. They are my family.”
Based in Los Angeles, Patullo’s diverse musical journey includes scoring over 30 films, fronting the Brooklyn-formed rock act White Widow, and serving as musical director for comedy legend Sandra Bernhard. She is a four-time Hollywood Music in Media Award nominee and has showcased her work at the Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences Museum.
In addition to her accomplishments in the music industry, Carla Patullo is a passionate advocate for inclusion, using her platform to support women, immigrants, and the LGBTQIA+ community.
