Oxford, UK: Alex Sam presented his research on alternative models of child care at the 7th Global Conference on Children and Youth, held in Oxford, United Kingdom, between 20 and 22 August 2026.
His paper, “Orphan Care Versus Family Care: An Ideological Study on Children in Orphanages and Foster Care vs Families,” explores the experiences of children growing up in orphanages, foster-care systems and family environments.
Alex Sam is associated with the International Leadership Development Centre, India, and presented the research to an international group of academics, social workers and professionals working with children and young people.

The research examines orphanhood through both academic and literary perspectives. It compares different caregiving environments and explores the potential effects of family separation on children’s emotional and social experiences.
Several well-known literary characters, including Oliver Twist, Jane Eyre, Huckleberry Finn and Harry Potter, are examined within the research. Their stories offer different perspectives on children navigating life without traditional family structures.
Alex Sam’s study considers how such stories have contributed to cultural perceptions of orphanhood and how these perceptions relate to contemporary discussions about child welfare.
The presentation also explored the importance of emotional security, belonging and supportive relationships. It examined the role of family-based care alongside foster and institutional alternatives.
Alex Sam emphasised that child welfare should focus on more than physical protection. Care systems should also seek to provide children with emotional support, stability and opportunities to develop in supportive environments.
He further highlighted the importance of evidence-based research, family strengthening and community participation in developing sustainable child protection systems.
His academic background includes business administration and social work, with professional and research interests in social work and child welfare.
The 7th Global Conference on Children and Youth created a platform for international exchange among people working in research, social development and children’s rights.
For Alex Sam, the presentation in Oxford represents an important academic and professional milestone and an opportunity to contribute to international discussions about the future of care for vulnerable children.
